Ginudgera Sub-catchment

Ginudgera

Ginudgera sub-catchment is located from Pian Creek south towards the Namoi River between Wee Waa, Burren Junction and Pilliga. It includes the alluvial drainage plains and floodplains of Pian Creek and the Namoi River. It covers an area of 989 km2 and is mainly flat with some small rises where prior streams have built up and sands have been deposited. The localities of Merah North and Cubbaroo are found within this sub-catchment.

This sub-catchment is drained by Pian Creek on the north side and the Namoi River on the south side. In between are Ginudgera Creek and Myall Camp, Cubbaroo and Millie Warrambools which assist with drainage during flood times..

Landscapes within this sub-catchment range from drainage plains to floodplains with soils ranging from brown to grey clay with traces of fine sediment to silty loam over red brown clay.

The land is mainly used for dryland agriculture, with extensive areas of irrigation close to Pian Creek and the Namoi River. This sub-catchment contains some very productive landscapes and soils. Throughout the sub-catchment there are areas of highly developed irrigation. Irrigation water is sourced from both groundwater and from river diversions. Cotton has been extensively grown throughout this sub-catchment for many years.

The issues within the sub-catchment include fragmented vegetation and degradation of existing vegetation communities, flooding, riparian management, soil sodicity and soil structural decline.
