Chaffey Sub-catchment

CHAFFEY

The Chaffey sub-catchment covers an area of 421km2 with headwaters at the top of the Great Dividing Range to the south and east flowing north picking up the major tributaries of Back Creek, Wambramurra Creek, the Peel River and Nundle Creek above the historic township of Nundle. These head waters are joined by Canns Creek flowing into Chaffey Dam which is the main water supply for the city of Tamworth.

Landscapes range from rugged hills and mountains at the top of the range to undulating hills. Elevations range from 1300m to 500m. The upper slopes are generally dominated by deep stony red clays with the mid to lower slopes are dominated by deep red brown earths.

Approximately 6% of the sub-catchment is State Forest or National Park. Vegetation types range from endangered grasslands through to open Box woodlands to sub-alpine forests.

The land uses in the sub-catchment are predominately sheep and cattle production and some small areas set aside for biodiversity conservation.

Main issues within the sub-catchment include flooding, soil erosion, biodiversity conservation, riparian and water quality management.
