Duncans Creek sub-catchment is located approximately 50km south east of Tamworth. It occupies an area of 120km2 and includes the township of Woolomin. Elevations range from 450m to 1300m ASL.
Landscapes within the Duncans Creek sub-catchment range from alluvial floodplains to low sloping hill slopes of red brown earths and rugged ranges that form part of the Great Dividing Range dominated by skeletal soils. The Duncan Creek sub-catchment is drained by Duncan Creek with tributaries including Junction, Stewarts and Rocky Creeks and many gullies including Dingo, Dip and Frews. The sub-catchment discharges into the Peel River at Woolomin.
Land uses within the sub-catchment mainly comprise grazing with some lucerne and high production pastures on the alluvial floodplains. Sheep and cattle are produced with increasing competition from the horse industry. Commercial softwood forestry is undertaken on the steeper higher elevations within the sub-catchment.
There are large areas of State Forest within this sub-catchment including Nundle and Hanging Rock State Forests. Vegetation types range from open Box woodlands through to sub alpine woodlands with rainforest pockets. There are large areas of planted radiata pine in the upper catchment.
The issues within the sub-catchment include flooding, soil erosion, biodiversity conservation, and water management and exotic timber production.
