The Goonoo Goonoo sub-catchment covers an area of 665km2 and is located south of Tamworth. Goonoo Goonoo Station is located in the centre of this sub-catchment. Elevations range from 1120m to 380m ASL.
Goonoo Goonoo Creek flows from the top of the sub-catchment picking up three major tributaries of Boiling Down Creek in the Gowrie area and Spring and Middlebrook Creeks flowing from the east. Goonoo Goonoo Creek is one of three major tributaries of the Peel River which all join just above Tamworth.
Landscapes within this sub-catchment range from floodplains dominated by basaltic alluvium to low sloping hill slopes and rugged ranges. Soils range from alluvial brown clays on the floodplains to red brown earths on the hill slopes to skeletal soils on the ranges.
Vegetation types range from endangered grasslands through to open Box woodlands to sub-alpine forests. More than 80% of the sub-catchment has been thinned for grazing and cropping.
The steeper lands and slopes are predominately used for sheep and cattle production and some small areas set aside for biodiversity conservation. The lower slopes and floodplains are used for both dry-land and irrigated lucerne and fodder production as well as winter cereal cropping.
The issues within the sub-catchment include flooding, soil erosion, biodiversity conservation, and water quality and salinity management. Other issues include urban expansion into productive farming and grazing country.
